The much anticipated game between TeleTekkers and Highflyers took place at a frantic pace both team knowing that points and goals were needed if either were going to pull themselves back in with a chance of winning the league.
It was Tekkers who struck first with a lovely through ball from young “Luca” Reid to put Blaney through on goal which was duly smashed into the bottom left corner between the sticks, the second came in quick succession; another Blaney goal, this time laid on by the Tekkers new boy, Paul “The Man with the Plan” Tran.
However, after this great start the Flyers started to play total football and moved the ball nicely between themselves, cutting the midfield up like warm butter and it wasn’t long before Tekkers keeper, Gwakin was picking the ball out of net with a fine strike from Mark Haines, the first of his campaign and only the third Flyers goal this season.
Then the young, energetic Reid went from provider to scorer with a cool finish to the bottom right making it 3-1. An easily foreseeable occurrence as the Flyers defense flapped about in a panic after the pressure of scoring. However, the underdogs steeled themselves again and battled back to 3-2 with a lovely chip from Harpem, which ended with a finish from none other than on-loan Will Eves, a volleyed smasher which, if only for a moment, drew attention away from his borrowed hot-pants/jumper combo; vile to behold, but game on!
After half time, it seemed the Tekkers looked fully aware that they were now in a serious battle of wits and physicality and slipped into a 6th gear coming out after the mid-break. Quick goals came from Reidy, Blaney and Gwatkin, the keeper cursing and making a scene that the low rising sun obscured his view of the game, and after 20 more minutes the score was a landslide 12-2, with Blaney grabbing a magical 7th goal of the game on the end whistle, some say the performance of the tournament so far. Reidy got 3 beauties and Ben grabbed 2 goals. From the Flyers Haines grabbed 1 goal and Will, 1 goal; despite the two forwards hitting the bar a handful of times.
Tekkers look like they are finding a second wind after being written off so early. The ‘Highflyers’ are looking more like the ‘Low-riders’ at the moment, and are being labeled the Blackburn of the Blackfriars league. The Highflyers fans are revolting in the stands…and they aren’t much better after they’ve smartened up either.
